Fabric Chess Board

I'm a huge lover of chess. I remember learning how to play chess in grade 7 or 8 because there was some sort of chess club during recess. I loved it but haven't really played since until a few months ago when I had a sudden urge to play.

I started making this chess board a long while ago. After I had most things done, I couldn't figure out how to make the special pieces. I got stuck on that for a week! I decided to make little symbols on them using pins. If I think of a better way to make them, I'll take the pins out and give the pieces a makeover.

P.S. It really makes me angry when I ask people to play (for example my mom) and their excuse is "I don't know how!". She makes it seem as if it's the most complicated thing in the world. It only takes a few minutes to learn!

Awesome job! I admit I'm intimidated by chess. I'm scared to learn. I bet it's really fun though. I just learned how to play poker so maybe I'll try chess soon.

That's so cool! I really like the pins! They're so simple, yet I think they make the pieces so much cooler.

this is awesome! i actually really like the way you used pins. i guess the next step would be to make teensy little crowns for the king and queen. hehe =]
and yeah, i'm horrible at chess (or any strategic game for that matter) but i don't mind playing it as long as people know i'm crap before they start the game haha ;]

Such a great idea, Dori, I really admire your originality and creativity. And you're right, chess is nowhere near as difficult as people first assume. I enjoy it, but I cannot claim to be very good :)

What an awesome idea, I've seen other chess boards made of different materials but always resembling the pieces as the traditional form, so this is brilliant!
Way to go Dori!!
Much love,
Ana

Haha thanks guys, but I actually haven't even played a chess game with these yet. Maybe it's too confusing and I'll have to change the pieces?

I'll find out soon!

i love your blog! and i love this idea! it reminds me of a craft i used to do as a child. i would make my own board games out of cardboard and construction paper. my favorite was "hipnopoly"- the hippie version of monopoly haha.
